Niles has more history per block than almost anywhere in the East Bay. It began as Vallejo Mills in 1856, joined four other towns to form Fremont in 1956, and in between it was America’s first Hollywood: the Essanay studio filmed here from 1912 to 1916, and Charlie Chaplin shot The Tramp in Niles Canyon in 1915. For a pool builder, that history has practical meaning. The core blocks carry early-1900s Victorians and Craftsman bungalows with mature trees and narrow side yards, so we design around a small-equipment excavation approach and hardscape that suits the era. Niles also sits inside one of Fremont’s Historical Overlay Districts: a backyard pool rarely triggers historic review on its own, but street-visible fencing changes on a historic parcel can, so we pre-check the plan with city Planning before submitting through the Citizen Access portal. And the water story is unbeatable: the Niles Cone Groundwater Basin, the aquifer under the entire district, is named after this neighborhood and recharged by the same Alameda Creek that exits the canyon beside it. Your pool fills with a blend that literally carries the neighborhood’s name.

Yes. Niles is part of the City of Fremont, where anything holding water over 18 inches deep meets the city’s definition of a swimming pool and needs a building permit. Applications go through Fremont’s online Citizen Access portal, reviewed by Building and Safety at the Development Services Center, 39550 Liberty St. We manage the process end to end.
Sometimes, and it is worth checking before you design. Niles sits inside a Fremont Historical Overlay District: a rear-yard pool rarely triggers historic review by itself, but changes to street-visible fencing or structures on a historic parcel can. We pre-check your specific parcel with city Planning so there are no surprises mid-permit.
Alameda County Water District, and here is the local twist: the Niles Cone Groundwater Basin, the aquifer under the whole Tri-City area, is named after this district and recharged by Alameda Creek at the canyon mouth. In a typical year ACWD blends roughly 40 percent local watershed supply, 40 percent State Water Project, and 20 percent San Francisco regional water.
Yes, that is standard work here. Early-1900s Victorian and Craftsman lots pair mature trees with narrow side yards, so we scale the excavation equipment to the access that exists and protect what makes these properties special.
Niles backs up against the East Bay hills where Alameda Creek exits the canyon, so hillside-edge lots get different engineering than the flat blocks near the creek: slope evaluation, drainage planning, and retaining design as needed, verified per lot.
Absolutely. Classic geometric shapes, period-sympathetic coping and tile, and hardscape that complements Victorian and Craftsman architecture suit this district far better than a generic suburban template. It is the same design discipline the neighborhood applies to its storefronts.
