### Shotcrete

**Definition:**
Shotcrete is a concrete mixture that is batched at a plant, delivered wet, and pneumatically sprayed at high velocity to form a swimming pool shell. Because the mix is proportioned under controlled conditions before it reaches the site, its compressive strength is consistent from one truck to the next. We build our pool shells in shotcrete rated at 4,000 PSI.

### Gunite

**Definition:**
Gunite is a dry-mix sprayable concrete in which sand and cement are conveyed dry through a hose and hydrated by the nozzleman at the point of application. It has been the default swimming pool shell material in the United States for decades and is typically specified at 2,500 PSI. The term is often used loosely to describe any sprayed-concrete pool, including shotcrete pools.

A dry-mix rig can work off a single hose over long distances and around obstacles, which is why it dominated in tight residential backyards long before pump trucks became common. ### PSI (Pounds per Square Inch)

**Definition:**
PSI is a unit of pressure equal to one pound of force distributed over one square inch of area. ### Rebar

**Definition:**
Rebar is deformed steel reinforcing bar tied into a three-dimensional cage inside the excavated pool cavity before concrete is sprayed. Concrete is strong in compression and weak in tension, so the steel carries the tensile loads the concrete cannot. The finished shell is a composite structure in which neither material would perform on its own.

### Steel Schedule

**Definition:**

### Expansion Joint

**Definition:**
An expansion joint is a deliberate, flexible separation between two rigid elements, most commonly between the pool's bond beam and the surrounding concrete deck. It allows the deck and the shell to move independently as temperature, moisture, and soil conditions change. Without it, deck movement transfers directly into the pool structure.

### Coping

**Definition:**
Coping is the finished cap that covers the top edge of the pool shell where the structure meets the deck. It provides the visible perimeter edge, protects the bond beam, and directs splash-out water away from the shell. ### Waterline Tile

**Definition:**
Waterline tile is a band of glazed ceramic, porcelain, glass, or stone tile installed at the top of the pool wall in the zone where the water surface sits. It occupies the band that collects body oils, sunscreen, and mineral scale, because tile can be scrubbed clean without damaging it. Plaster and pebble finishes cannot be cleaned that aggressively.

### Pool Decking

**Definition:**
Pool decking is the hard surface surrounding the pool, typically poured concrete, pavers, or natural stone, engineered with slope and drainage that carries water away from the pool and the house. ## Construction Process and Phases

Pool construction is a sequence of separate operations, each with its own crew, its own inspection, and its own dependencies.

### Excavation

**Definition:**
Excavation is the phase in which the pool cavity is dug to the shape and depth shown on the approved plans. It begins with a physical layout of the pool's footprint on the ground, follows with machine digging and hand shaping, and ends with the cavity ready for steel and plumbing. On most residential projects it takes a single day.

### Pre Plan Meeting (PPM)

A Pre Plan Meeting, or PPM, is a scheduled on-site meeting after the contract is processed and before plans are submitted for permit, held to review how the pool will actually be built. It brings the design, drafting, management, and field construction roles together with the homeowner at the property. It is the point where a design becomes a buildable plan.

### Rough Plumbing

**Definition:**
Rough plumbing is the phase in which all suction, return, and feature lines are installed in the excavated cavity and trenched to the equipment pad before concrete is sprayed. It establishes the pool's circulation path: water leaves through skimmers and main drains, passes through pump and filter, and returns through inlets and features. Once the shell is shot, these lines are permanently buried.

### California Title 24

### Total Alkalinity

**Definition:**

## About Royal Pools by Adams

Royal Pools by Adams has designed and built custom swimming pools and spas across the San Francisco Bay Area since 1969, working from the same San Jose location. We are the new-pool construction division of Adams Pool Solutions, which acquired Royal Pools in 2010. The Adams family has been building pools since 1953.

We build custom in-ground pools in shotcrete at 4,000 PSI with a 65 pcf double-reinforced steel schedule, integrated spas with separate temperature controls, water features, Baja shelves and beach entries, and complete decking, tile, coping, and drainage.
